GlaxoSmithKline

GlaxoSmithKline – one of the world's leading research based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) is a global pharmaceutical, biologics, vaccines and consumer healthcare company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the world's third-largest pharmaceutical company measured by revenues (after Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer).

GSK was formed in 2000 by the merger of GlaxoWellcome plc (formed from the acquisition of Wellcome plc by Glaxo plc), and SmithKline Beecham plc (from the merger of Beecham plc, and SmithKline Beckman Corporation).

Products
GSK produce medicines that treat major disease areas such as asthma, anti-virals, infections, mental health, diabetes, cardiovascular and digestive conditions.

In addition, it is a leader in the important area of vaccines and is developing new treatments for cancer.

It also markets other consumer products, many of which are among the market leaders:

Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines including alli, Gaviscon and Panadol.

Dental products such as Aquafresh and Sensodyne.

  Smoking control products Nicorette/Niquitin

Nutritional healthcare drinks such as Lucozade, Ribena and Horlicks.

Skincare products marketed by Stiefel Laboratories.

From molecules to medicines

At GSK, the areas of R&D are selected both by those conditions where new treatments are needed – either because there are no medicines or because symptom control can be improved upon – and where the scientific understanding of a disease process is ‘ripe’ for translation.

Discovery Performance Units (DPUs) are created which are small teams of multi-discipline scientists – between seven and 70 – all working together and concentrating on one disease mechanism or scientific area. Late-stage development of a potential new medicine is managed by a Medicines Development Team (MDT).

Corporate social responsibility

GSK has been active in a global alliance to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.
In addition GlaxoSmithKline has been short-listed for awards such as the Worldaware Business Award for its work to eliminate malaria in Kenya.

GlaxoSmithKline recently donated money to the British flood appeal, and was ranked first on the 2006 UK Corporate Citizenship Index for donations.

Achievements

GSK was named one of the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers in 2007 by Working Mother magazine and was recognized by the International Charter for its efforts.

GSK also received a perfect score of 100 percent from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 2008 Corporate Equality Index.
